UTIs are not really a sexually transmitted infection, however they can occur as a result of sexual activity. They are much more common among women. Symptoms usually occur fairly soon after infection and may include:
Burning sensation when passing urine
Urgency to pass urine
Urine that is cloudy or that contains blood
A high temperature
An ache in the lower back
To reduce your chances of getting a urine infection you can:
Drink plenty of water
Pass urine and wash shortly after sex
Maintain good personal hygiene
If you think you might have a urine infection:
Drink plenty of fluids, including cranberry juice
Rest
If necessary take a painkiller, following the instructions on the packet.
If symptoms persist see your doctor, they will do a test on a sample of your urine, and may prescribe antibiotics.
